Mobility Aids

We have a number of items that may assist our less able visitors and we are currently able to provide a commode, bedside tray/table, toilet seat raiser, toilet surround and shower stool.  Please let us know prior to your arrival if you would like us to supply any of the above during your stay.

The nearest bus stop is on the main Horning Road through the village approximately one mile from Heron Cottage.  The nearest train station is in Wroxham, approximately 6 miles away; there are accessible taxis at the station.

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

There is free parking for two vehicles at the front of the cottage.  The car park is gravel, but flat and even.  There is no street parking.  The front door is approached through a gate and a sloping wooden walkway 1.35 (approx) with a handrail on the right hand side.  When you arrive, we can help you with your luggage.

Main Entrance and Hallway

The entrance has a level threshold.  The door is 80cm wide and the key hole lock is 90 cm high, the door opens inwards.  Inside the front door is a corridor 1 metre wide with lounge, kitchen/diner, bedroom, shower room and stairs to first floor.  The kitchen/diner has no doorway and is immediately in front of the entrance door.  The hallway is restricted narrowed to 65cm by a hall table and then widens to 1 metre where there is a storage heater.


The lounge is accessed from the hallway (door width 80cm).  Flooring is short pile carpet with a rug in front of the patio doors (140cm wide, opening inwards, lock height 90cm).  Furniture is moveable and there are plenty of scatter cushions.  Teletext TV is provided with Freeview and remote control, there is also a DVD player and wireless flat panel Hi-Fi system.

Self-Catering Kitchen/Diner

The kitchen diner is approached through an archway 120cm wide.  Worktop height is 90cm.  The oven is built under and has a drop down door, the height of the shelves can be altered with the lowest shelf being at 40 cm.  The worktop and hob height is 90cm.  Flooring is ceramic tiles.  There is at least 80cm of free space between all furniture and worktops.  The kitchen is evenly lit with spotlights under the wall cupboards.  There is good contrast between floor, cupboards and other surfaces.  There is a built in fridge/freezer, highest shelf in the fridge is 170cm, lowest 110cm and lower drawer in freezer is 40 cm, highest 80cm.  The glass table provided is 80cm high, 150cm long and 90cm wide with 75cm space underneath.  The sink is 90cm high with cupboards and a dishwasher underneath.


There is a standard size built in washer dryer, which is front loading, provided in the kitchen.


Room combinations – ground floor – twin room, first floor – 2 double (one with king size bed).

Non feather duvets and pillows and additional blankets are provided in each room.  Sheets, duvet cover and pillow cases are poly-cotton.  All bedrooms have portable television with remote control.  A hairdryer is also provided in each bedroom.  All bedrooms have ceiling lights, beside lamps and natural daylight.

Ground Floor Bedroom

Door width 80cm.  Two single beds provided with a gap of 90cm in between.  Bed height is 60cm to top of mattress.  Non-feather duvets and pillows are provided.  Sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases are cotton.  Remote control portable television is provided.  Largest transfer space available to the left of one bed and right of the other is 60cm.  Largest free space clear of doors and furniture is 120cm by 180cm.  Beds are moveable if more space is required – please advise before arrival.

Ground Floor Shower Room

Door width 80cm, opens outwards.  Toilet seat height 40cm, we can provide a toilet surround and toilet seat raiser if required.  There is no space to the left or right of the toilet. Entrance to shower 65cm, door opens outwards, we can provide a shower stool if required.  Rim height (step over) is 9cm. Good colour contrast between floor and walls.  The washbasin is opposite the entrance door and is of small cloakroom size.

First floor

Reached via a staircase of 13 steps with a turn half way, steps are 20cm high, 25cm deep and 80cm wide.  Handrails to the right.  Short pile carpet on stairs and throughout the first floor (excluding the bathroom).  Main landing 140cm by 4 metres with storage unit and fire extinguisher.  All doors to the bedrooms and bathroom on this floor are 70cm wide.

First Double Bedroom

Bed height 55cm, 4ft 6ins bed, space to the right of the bed 1 metre, space to the left of the bed 45 cm.  Free space, clear of doors and furniture is 3metres by 1.5 metres.

Second double bedroom (with king size bed)

Bed Height 60cm, 5ft bed, space to left and right of bed 1.5metres.  Opposite entrance door there are French doors, opening inwards (single door width 70 cm, double door width 140 cm) leading to a balcony 4 metres by 2 metres.


Bath with flexible and fixed shower over, bath height is 55cm, available free space free of door and furniture is 1.5 metres by 1.5metres.  Toilet height is 40cm.  Space to the left and right of the toilet is 30 cm.  Ceramic tiled floor giving good contrast with walls and furniture.  Space under wash basin is free.

Grounds and Gardens

There is a small gated seating area to the front of the property with wood chip underfoot.  The decking area to the rear of the property is accessed through the patio doors down two steps 30cm wide by 20 cm high.  Heron Cottage is a riverside property therefore extreme caution is required at all times particularly when using the decking area, which is open to the river.

Access to the gardens at Heron Lodge is via a wooden walkway.  Fishing is available from the cottage with a current licence, in season only.

Additional Information

The information folder is produced in size 14 font or larger.  Mobile phone reception is poor, therefore a phone (with ‘honesty’ box) is provided in the lounge.

The cottage is non smoking.

No pets are allowed.

Heron Cottage is rated by the  National Accessible Scheme as suitable for older and less mobile guests.  As it is a riverside property, extreme care is required at all times.
